Triathlon success

Despite a few pre-race mishaps, the Ruapehu Health & Fitness Centre team struck success in the Taumarunui triathlon on the weekend. The team was Gavin Johnson, Charles Mareikura and Siegfried Bauer. In the individual class Gavin was not discouraged by arriving at the start after the field had left and caught up the mid-field quickly, managing to hold and improve his position tjrrough the canoeing section. During the cycling section he really excelled, finishing sixth place overall, which indicates a very fast cycle time. Siegfried in the run and Charles in the kayak and cycle gained first place in the veteran mens class, winning by a comfortable margin of about 47 minutes. This was despite being a two man team competing against three man teams. Charles had not only to contend with a cycle and kayak, but also faced some pre-race excitement when he found a large hole burned into the tyre of his racing cycle, from the support car's exhaust. Fitting a standard tyre proved a problem with its larger diameter, but the job was done. He cycled with determination then worked even harder in the canoe to ensure his team's victory.
