This week's article focuses on Rachael Chan who left New Zealand for Japan on an AFS (American Field Service) course on Saturday. Rachael is one of eighteen students nationally going to Japan. Rachael has spent time preparing for this trip, improving her Japanese, trying to learn the culture and the big job of raising the money needed which was in excess of $7,000. She will be attending Nara Prefectural Koriyama Senior High School for one year, returning late February 1993. She will be staying with a Japanese family of six in Nara. Rachael hopes to learn more about Japanese Culture and History. She also hopes to improve her skills in calligraphyj flower arranging and the famous Japanese art of tea ceremonies. We asked Rachael what she was feeling as the trip came closer, she replies "People ask me if I'm scared, but I'm not scared I'm just excited. I suppose that's just the way it is."
