Hopes for early Ruapehu skiing
Weather patterns are already shaping up for a good ski season according to Ruapehu Alpine Lifts marketing manager Scott Lee. Snow still fills high valleys on Mt Ruapehu which will provide a base for autumn snow,
he said. Whakapapa could be open mid-May, six weeks before normal. Turoa is also geared up for an early start, with much of the lifts maintenance work having been done in spring la&t year. The persistent snow cover during
spring meant maintenance work could be carried out much more easily, thanks to being able to use the snow groomers. Whakapapa is optimistic, having had two good ski seasons and now having snow mak-
ing facilities at Happy Valley which will help them open early if temperatures stay low. RAL plans to open Happy Valley on 28 May, but could open on 14 May if there is a cold snap early in the month. A new platter lift is being built in Happy
Valley, as well as a new ski hire building. With snow down to the Express Quad Chairlift, at 2000 metres, Department of Conserva-
tion Whakapapa field centre manager is also optimistic. He said _the snow line was the lowest it had been in February , for 10 years.
