Mission Statement Challenged

Ruapehu District Council's vision for the future or "Mission Statement" reads "Our purpose is to promote an environment which enhances the quality of life and meets the needs of our citizens" Their key goals sup-

port this ideal and I firmly support them in this worthy cause. Yet their plan to effectively downgrade even further of the essential services that do enhance our quality of life in the Waimarino, namely the library service, seems to contradict this statement wildly. I wish to voice my lack of confidence in the decision makers and charge them with a callous disregard for the needs of our present and future citizens. Some people believe that planning is merely deciding what to do in the future. A better description of planning, however, may be deciding what you have to do in order to have a future. I query the figure of $258,000 as the annual running costs of the District libraries. A full report will be needed to restore confidence to the ratepayers here. I also wish to follow up the question about the relevance of the Community Boards and their cost to the ratepayer. Why was this question not answered at the meeting?
