Majority ruled out?

• A survey was conducted in January of Ohura Road, Raetihi residents to ascertain their views on the matter of a change to the road name. The survey results were tabled at the Waimarino Community Board meeting on 13 February. I understand there were 19 replies. Eleven favoured the retention of Ohura Road (with 2 of this number

also finding Orautoha Road acceptable). Eight respondents opted for a name change: 5 for Ruatiti Road and 3 for Orautoha Road. To my way of thinking, the majority (11 out of 19) were generally happy to keep the name Ohura Road. When put to a Community Board vote, the name Orautoha won out. I admit to feelings of incredulity that such a thing could occur. Perhaps naively, I thought that a Community Board would honour the preferences of, in this case, the Ohura Road community. To think that only 5 surveyed people (3 very clearly and 2 less so) preferred the name Orautoha Road, compared with 11 in favour of the existing name. I am appalled at our local Community Board over-riding the survey results and voting for a name which only a small minority want.
