Council lawns below par

Council lawns in the Waimarino are not being kept up to scratch, according to mayor Garrick Workman. He said he had asked the Waimarino Community Board to consider what standard they expected for the council's lawns and had received no comment. "Are my standards too high or are you happy with the standard of maintenance," he asked. "I think the standard of maintenance in reserves and cemeteries hasn't been entirely satisfactory." "You need to decide what standard of maintenance is acceptable so management knows where it stands." Board members said

they were not impressed with recent maintenance but put it down to the amount of rainfall over summer and to staff levels. "The grass got away several times but so did my lawns," said member Bill Peach. General manager Cliff Houston said mowing has been worse than usual, caused by a lack of staff and tired machinery. He said because the council was soon to consider tendering the lawn mowing to private contractors, equipment had not been replaced (pending a decision). He predicted an improvement in performance in this area this year.
