Battle for Bavarian makes TVNZ news
Raetihi's Bavarian Lodge is the centre of a wrangle between developers Lionel and Pat West and the New Zealand Police ski club that has made the national television news in recent days. The ski club has bought the lodge by tender through a mortgagee sale, but the Wests are refusing to vacate the premises. The Bulletin understands a group of offduty policemen visited the lodge on Saturday, and confronted the Wests. During the confrontation a window at the front
door of the lodge was smashed. Following this incident the Wests contacted their lawyers and then TVNZ to tell their side of the story. At that stage it was thought the policemen were acting in an official capacity rather than as buyers of the lodge. In the television news item the actions of the off-duty policemen were described as "police thuggery". The Bulletin has tried repeatedly to contact the Wests but, despite evidence to suggest they still occupy the Bavarian
Lodge, they would not respond. The Waimarino police staff who were on duty on the weekend said they could not comment on the incident, apart from to say there were no Waimarino police officers involved in the incident. A Raetihi resident told the Bulletin that a group of Raetihi people had put in the highest tender for the lodge, but had decidcd not to take it up as they expected difficulties in gaining possession of the property.
