Territorials invade Waiouru
The annual field training exercise (AFE) for the Territorial Army called 'Exercise Modetrain', started on Saturday and will run until Sunday 9 February. The New Zealand Army's 1 Brigade commands the Territorials and is co-ordinating the
AFE. This year the exercises scenario paints the picture that 1 Brigade is operating as part of a large ANZAC force protecting re-supply lines from enemy interference. The scenario allows for two phases of training. Phase one sees the
exercise participants prepare defensive positions and taking part in 'staged' training activities. Phase two allows for live firing and more manoeuvring of troops around the training area. Activities that will be conducted during AFE include live firing attacks, river crossings and digging in to defend certain areas. While - the combat soldiers get practised in
their specialities, the logistics soldiers too will be practised in supporting them by providing catering and transport, medical evacuation and care equipment, ammunition, fuel and equipment maintenance and repairs. AFE allows the Territorials to come together to train. It also enables the commandcrs to view and evaluate the effectiveness of the training.
