Poor weather poors cold water on Park programme
Bad weather has seen numbers taking part in Tongariro National Park guided activities this summer reduced on previous years. Whakapapa Field Centre Manager Russell Montgomery said during good spells numbers have been pleasing, however. He said numbers attending evening talks at the centre has been pleasing with up to 80 people attending some
sessions. The Whakapapa programme has another week to run, while the Ohakune programme finished on Suhday. Ohakune 's programme was steadily supported, said Ohakune Field Centre manager Lisle Irwin. He said numbers picked up just before New Year's Eve but tapcred away towards the end. The most popular trips were to the Crater Lake, the night walk and the 'Timber Trails' walk
along old logging tram tracks. He said some of the evening programmes were well attended, covering topics such as a history of the region, climate change involving snow and ice, and Mt Everest National Park.
