Raetihi-ideally placed between the Parks
Outdoor adventures begin in Raetihi with access to both the Whanganui and Tongariro National Parks only a 15 minute drive from the Town. With a wide variety of accommodation available, Raetihi is an ideal location to spend a few days or as a base for the activities available in the National Parks and local rivers and forests. All walks in the Southern Ruapehu District are handy, as are scenic drives to the 'M ang anui- a-T e- Ao' River and the Ruatiti Domain and further up
the Valley to the start of the walk to Mangapurua Valley and on to the 'Bridge to Nowhere.' A short drive to historical Pipiriki and a visit to the Colonial House, views of the Whanganui River, a jet boat ride to the world famous 'Drop Scene', access to the Matemateaonga walkway and the Bridge to Nowhere, are all at hand. Raetihi boasts easy access to great trout fishing in the local rivers and lakes with an opportunity to photograph and study the endangered blue duck. For
the adventurous there are three and five day canoe trips on the Whanganui River, kayaking the Manganui-a-Te-Ao river and pig and deer hunting. For further information on canoe hire, trips, vehicle ferrying for canoeists, trout fishing, hunting, accommodation, walkways and all activities on the Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks contact the Raetihi Information Centre 06-385-4805 or Raetihi Motor Camp 06-385-4176 Fax. 06-385-4059.
