Outdoor activities. Equipment and Clothing The right clothing and equipment are needed for all outdoor activities. Tongariro/Taupo wea-ther can be very changeable, especially in the mountains which are prone to dramatic extremes of weather. If you are adequately equipped, activities will be enjoyable and satisfying; otherwise they can be unpleasant and risky. Equipment and clothing requirements vary depending on the location and length of each activity. An afternoon visiting a Taupo reserve obviously requires less gear than a day on Mount Tongariro. The items essential for high altitude day trips are; sunhat and sunscreen, sunglasses, day pack, warm hat and gloves, stout footwear (walking boots or sturdy shoes), warm clothing (upper and lower body), waterproof parka and overtrousers, lunch and a drink. Wool, polyester fibrepile and polypropylene are best for clothing. Cotton is useless when wet. Checkthat your parka is waterproof; many fabrics such as uncoated nylon are only windproof. Crater Lake trips are in snow. You will need good quality sunglasses and leather tramping boots. Handy extras include a camera, binoculars, magnifying lens, maps and field guide publications, and some scroggin or trail mix. The organiser reserves the right to exclude from any activity any person not adequately prepared or equipped for conditions that may be encountered. Reservations To ensure a high standard of safety and quality of experience the numbers of participants on some activities will be limited. When there is a restriction on numbers the activity is identified in the programme with this symbol (*). To ensure that you are able to participate in these activities it is essential to reserve tickets in advance. Reservations can be made any time during opening hours and will be accepted from 2 December onwards. Turnpage 7
