Join our conservation officer as he introduces you to whio, its habitat and some of the Department of Conservation's strategy to help this species succeed into the future. Drive approx 30 km. CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES Grade 1 l i These activities start at the Ohakune Ranger Station at 2.00pm. The activities last for approximately two hours and are suitable for children aged between four and 14 years of age. CRATER LAKE Grade 5 •ma The Crater Lake is a steaming acid bath surrounded by glacial ice cliffs and the high peaks of Ruapehu. The crater rim is reached after passing beautiful patches of alpine buttercups and daisies en route over rock, ice and snow. A full and exciting day. Essential items include: leather tramping boots (not gumboots), waterproof parka and overtrousers, warm trousers and top, warm hat/mittens, dark glasses and sunscreen, lunch and a drink. Drive approx 17 km. CREATURES OF THE NIGHT Grade 1 2) New Zealand bush at night - it can be a scary place to be, but not if you know who's out there. Thewalktakesusrightaround this pristine lake which usually provides excellent reflections of Mt Ruapehu. Bring yourswim gear. Drive approx. 1 0 km. LAKE SURPRISE Grade 3 Passing cascading waterfalls and mountain flowers we descend into the Mangaturuturu Valley, following the round-the-mountain track. After crossing the river, a steady climb over an old lava flow brings us to Lake Surprise, nestled amongst high altitude mountain beech and tussock. Drive approx 17 km. MANGAEHUEHU GLACIER GRADE 4 #^(3 High on the steep slopes of Mt Ruapehu a river of ice carves and gouges its way down towards Ohakune. We climb up through Turoa skifields to visit this glacier's surface and to discover how it moves and why. Gear required: as for Crater Lake. MANGATURUTURU ^ HEADWATERS Grade 4 W WLJ This walktakes us outtothe north of Turoa Skifield. Huge bluffs, spectacular waterfalls and lush alpine flower beds are trademarks of this walk to the source of the Mangaturuturu Cascades - a natural two-metre high fountain. Drive approx 17 km. RANGATAUA ^ ^ - MOUNTAIN BIKING Grade 3 *2$ A full day trip to Rangataua Forest to sample some of the best riding opportunities in the area. We'll ride down a wide range of tracks through some excellent scenery as well as make a short walk to Lake Rotokura. Bring your lunch and a sense of humour!

The magnificent forests of Ohakune, now protected forever, were once the source of a thriving timber industry. Join us as we walk the old tram lines, through hand dug cuttings and past old milling machinery in a visitto a bygone era. Drive approx 20 km.
