Vertical groups discussed

Last week parents and teachers of Waiouru kindergartens met to decide on whether to continue or discontinue the new vertical group system which was on trial this term. The change in structure saw both three and four-year olds mixed and every child had two morning and two afternoon sessions each week. Wednesday was set aside for administration. At the meeting advantages and disadvantages of vertical grouping

were discussed. The main advantage is that vertical grouping provides role models for the younger children which helps produce a settled environment. The main disadvantage was that parents thought the three-year olds felt intimidated by the older children and their level of productivity dropped. At both kindergartens the majority of parents voted to continue vertical grouping. A small minority strongly opposed this decision.
