DoC may take on Lakes Reserve

Divesting control of the Ohakune Lakes Scenic Reserve to the Department of Conservation would be better for the district. That was the recommendation of the Council working party that is looking at council owned property which may be surplus to requirements. The Waimarino Community Board endorsed the recommendation at their meeting last Thursday, after hearing that DoC had a strong interest in having its 1978 management plan of the reserve implemented.

DoC's plans for the reserve would be of benefit for the district, and the council had no plans for it, said board member Bill Peach. Among other surplus property discussed was the Rochfort Station reserve (near the Rochfort Park football ground -

where a caravan park was sited some years ago) and reserve land at Turoa Village. The working party has recommended that three parcels of reserve land at Turoa Village be sold. The land was given to the council as part of a reserve contribution

when the village was subdivided. "Considering a nine hole golf course, the Ohakune Domain and open farmland is adjacent to this subdivision the reserves contribution would seem to be excessive," said the working party report.
