Community task force

THE COUNCIL has taken advantage of the Government's Community Task Force Scheme to enable areas to be developed for the benefit of the community as a whole. There are presently two such schemes operating in Taumarunui and Council is presently looking into operating other schemes within the areas of the District. One of the schemes presently operating in Taumarunui is dealing with forestry development and has just completed scrub cutting and burning at Te Peka. They are presently undertaking the planting of the area with Eucalyptus Botryoides a tree species suitable for firewood, which should see the first harvest in seven to eight years. The other scheme is dealing with beautification of area in and around Taumarunui. They are presently involved with the task of beautifying the entrances to town, and will also be undertaking improvements in the Taumarunui Old Cemetery on Golf Road which should enable Council to maintain it at a low annual cost. The schemes presently employ 11 staff working three days a week. All staff were previously unemployed for some length of time and are enjoying the opportunity of working on projects that will be of benefit to the community.
