Mayor to chair new committee

Ruapehu mayor Garrick Workman was elected chairman of the new council Hearing's Committee at its first meeting last Friday in Taumarunui. Mr Workman was elected ahead of the other nominee, Bill Penny who was the previous Regulatory Committee chairman. Councillor Graeme Cosford nominated Mr Workman, saying because the committee would not meet very often, chairing it would not be a full-time job. He said Mr Workman had his "finger on the pulse" of district activities. The council would save money by electing him. The committee would gain a lot from the continuity of having Mr Penny chair the committee which replaced the Regulatory Committee, said Mr Penny's nominator, Doug Bennett.
