Raetihi beef success
Raetihi stock breeders met with success at the New Zealand Agriculture Royal Show held recently in Palmerston North. The annual event is held alternately in the North and South Islands and is considered the show place for New Zealand top livestock breeders. Jamie and Mathew Proude who farm at Lakes Road as "Herrington Simmentals" took their 2year old 900kg
Simmental bull fondly known as "Herrington Hero" to the show. A hero he turned out to be, taking the New Zealand Simmental 2-year old bull class. Jamie proudly points out that "Hero's" second birthday was 14 November as he was a late calf and was by far the youngest bull competing which surely must stand him in line for further successes in the future. Okauhu Hereford Stud
owners Pat and Kelly O'Neill also had noteworthy success with their 14-month Hereford bull "Genius" who won the New Zealand Junior Hereford Bull title, (for bulls born after August) the New Zealand Senior Hereford Bull title (for bulls born prior to August). "Genius" was runner up in the Yearling All-breeders class competing against 64
other contenders. With a frame score of 8 plus this system has a grading of 1 to 10 with only one Hereford bull in the world holding a rating of 10 by which others are judged, on a size-for-age basis. The local big boy is to travel to Auckland to compete at the Royal Easter Show and by then Kelly O'Neill predicts that he will be somewhat larger.
