Burglary spate causes concern
The following article is from Waimarino Police Sergeant Bob Evans. "As can be appreciated the Waimarino area has recently been struck by an increasing number of burglaries. The burglar- • ies have occurred both ! within commercial and j residential areas of i Raetihi and Ohakune and I also in the greater rural | area. | "This spate of burglaries is causing > Police concern and Ru- | apehu Mayor Garrick I Workman has relayed I this concern of the wider community to Police. I "The problem with I these burglaries is diffi- ! cult to address as the tari gets appear to be ran- ! domly selected and the | property taken is diffi- | cult to identify and obviously readily sold. "We feel that the majority of these burglaries have been committed by a small group of active criminals resident within the Waimarino area. Consequently more and more Police time is being targeted towards apprehending these offenders. "We appeal to the public for assistance in this area. The public can help by ensuring their property is secure and reporting suspicious behaviour either directly to the Ohakune Police or, if the station is unmanned, by calling the emer-
gency 111 line to Wanganui. They will contact the local on-call officer. "Together we will be able to curb this spate of burglaries." Sgt Evans stressed that if people want to contact the police outside normal hours they should ring 111. He said
the Waimarino station answer phone is cleared at the start of each shift and not during times when an officer is oncall. "If you want to get hold of us and we are not at the station, ring 111. That is what the number is for," said Sgt Evans.
