Raetihi spruce-up planned
A plan to upgrade the main street of Raetihi has been put to the council by the Raetihi Promotions Group. The plan has been submitted to the Ruapehu District Council and will be discussed at the Waimarino Community Board meeting on Thursday night, 7.30pm at the Ohakune Service Centre. The group proposes to form a trust to improve Seddon Street by acquiring and demolishing derelict buildings, beautification of the cleared sites and possibly a new
shopping complex. The group has requested that when the derelict properties are acquired that rate relief be granted until the land can be sold at a reasonable market value, when the economic situation improves. Council general manager Cliff Houston has outlined the options available in a report to the community board. He said the Council can only give rates remission in cases of extreme financial hardship. He said the council could postpone payment of
rates, or could acquire the land itself and then sell it at a later date. The option of turning the land into reserve was not recommended, he said, because the council had more than adequate reserves and selling the
land later would be much more difficult. Also to be discussed at Thursday 's board meeting are: review of community board structure and alternatives; combining the Ohakune
Service Centre and the Ruapehu Visitor Centre services; roadside weeds spraying, Mangapurua Valley Road resumption; Jubilee Park playground improvements; Horopito Hall; progress reports.
