Trout fishing report

LINES
The fishing season opened on 1 October and due to the local rivers being very high for the beginning of the month, few fish were caught. However as soon as the rivers returned to normal there were some fish rising in the evening. The rises have been very good in the Manganuiateao River
with six or seven fish seen in some pools and good fish being caught on the dry fly. Anglers are urged to fill in the data cards so Fish and Game Council staff can manage and enhance the fishery. In November 1990 1,000 tagged rainbow trout fingerlings were released into the Manganuiateao River and Fisheries staff
are very keen to find out how they are growing. The local Ruapehu Fish and Game Club committee are very concemed at the state of the Mangawhero River. The willows growing along the banks have increased rapidly and a programme or treating the trees with 'Round Up' has been started. Also some of the vegetable washing settling ponds have been found to be below the standard required by Fisheries staff. The local members of the Ruapehu Fish and Game club will be organising a Take a Kid Fishing Day' in February next year.
