Crater hike

A hardy group of about 150 skiers and trampers took advantage of ideal conditions to join the Ruapehu Ski Patrol on a guided walk to the Crater Lake on Mt Ruapehu last Saturday. Organized as part of Whakapapa Ski Area's spring promotions the guided walk has been an annual event since 1987 when it was part of the National Park Centennial celebrations. The one hour climb was rewarded with superb skiing on the lower half of the Paretetaitonga Glacier as the participants joined the crowds back on the Whakapapa slopes.
