Even more snow!
The bad weather that has lashed New Zealand for much of spring has proved a bonus for ski area operators at Whakapapa. Cold south-westerly winds and heavy precipitation has dumped metres of snow on the ski area for the last four weeks. The snow base depth level at Whakapapa is now 3.36 metres, more than twice the amount at this time last year. "We're thrilled with all the snow", said Scott Lee, Marketing Manager for Whakapapa. "There's groomed trails right to the Top'O the Bruce and more snow on the upper ski area than most of us
have ever seen. There's spring promotions happening on the mountain and special deals to encourage skiers to come up." Due to the excellent snow conditions Whakapapa will remain
open until November 10 1991. Despite ample snow levels at Turoa, that field will close on 28 October, because it is uneconomic to operate with the reduced numbers of people attending, said management.
