Landownerfunded seal work now possible

If a ratepayer or group of ratepayers wants to have their road sealed they can do so, as long as they pay for it. This was the decision of the Ruapehu District Council at last week's special council meeting. The decision follows resquests from some Taumarunui ratepayers who did not want to wait for the council to work through its priority work list. The council agreed that applications for seal extensions on minor roads be approved only where all funding for the works is provided by those property owners directly benefitting; Planning, design, supervision and administration costs be provided by the Council providing the application is supported by the relevant Ward Committee or Community Board; Applications for seal extension on collector or arterial routes be a full Council cost funded by the area requesting the work providing the work is supported by full council. Council general manager Cliff Houston said the council had to decide priorities. He said if someone comes along with part funding for a seal extension should they 'leapfrog' other work which may be more meritorious. One councillor, Doug Bennett, asked for his vote against the motion to be recorded.
