Fire fighters burn up ski race course

Once again the New Zealand Fire Fighters Ski Race Champs, hosted by the Ohakune Fire Brigade last week, were a roaring success. The brigade hosted teams from all over the North Island for the races which included 112 competitors in 28 teams of four. Winners of the twoday competition, which started with a Giant Slalom on Thursday and a dual slalom on Friday, were the Ohakune "Top Team", consisting of Graham Murdie, Rob McCallum, Karen Hawke and Duane Dixon They scored 145 points, just nine ahead of "Flannigan's P... Heads" from Wellington, with 154 points.

Last team home, to win the FU Coupling Trophy were Brown Watch Leftovers, from Wellington with 406 points. Fastest male skier was Rick Powell from the Fat Boys ski team of Taupo, who skied the Giant Slalom in a time of 35.23 seconds. Fastest woman firefighter skier was Caroline "Stitch" Giles with a time of 47.44 seconds. Slowest person was Dan Hayman who took about 4 minutes 54 seconds Off-mountain activities included A.J.Hacket horizontal bungy jumping, which saw strong competition to stretch the large rubber band to its limits, and the mechanical bucking bull.
