College ski races completed despite weather

Kings College of Auckland took the first prize in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Skiing Competition, hosted at Whakapapa by Ruapehu College last week. Bad weather made the running of the competition difficult, but all races were completed on Tuesday and Wednesday, after Monday was lost due to the ski field being closed. Race chief Rick Knight said it was the first time for several

years that the first day of racing was lost, and that the "extremely marginal" conditions on day two put pressure on everybody. He said it was great to have people with race knowledge and mountain experience coming back each year. The lifts were run for an extra hour to complete racing on the Tuesday, said event coordinator John Laurenson. Changes to the competition this year in-

cluded the extension of the event from the North Island to take in the whole of New Zealand. But despite individual invitations to over 100 South Island schools, none responded. Mr Laurenson said they would try again next year to have South Island schools represented. Also new were prizes for the fastest individual skiers in each division. First senior male home was Mark Laing of

Feilding Agricultural High School (21.59 seconds); fastest senior female was Jenny Ryan from Epsom Girls Grammar School (23.73 sec); fastest junior female was Natalee Wignall from Westlake. Girls High School (23.53 sec); and fastest junior male was Geoffrey Small of Saint Paul's College (22.90sec). Second team on the points table was Saint Paul's College; 3rd Epsom Girl's Grammar; 4th

Woodford House; 5th Westlake Boys High School. Highest scoring first timers were Whakatane High School. Thanks went to helpers and supporters of the event from co-or-dinator John Laurenson and race chief Rick Knight. Mentioned in their reports were: the Whakapapa staff for their help and course chiefs Kath Campbell, Suzie Couch, Richard Lindsay and Ian Gray.
