New Zealand Winter Games are here!
Gold, silver and bronze trophies and certificates, the first ever to be awardcd for the New Zealand Winter Games, will be presented to event winners during the games which start next week. For ihe first two events-the 12km Fun Run from Raetihi to Ohakune and the 25 km Cycling time trial medals and trophies will be presented at the official opening ceremony by the Rt Hon Jim Bolger, Prime Minister and MP for King Country , and Sir Ron Scott. The 12 km Fun Run is open to all-comers betwccn the ages of 15 and 55 + and everyone who completes the course will receive a New Zealand Winter Games Certificate at the very least. A New Zealand Winter Games Gold, Silver or Bronze medal will be presented if they win 1st, 2nd or 3rd place within their respective age brackets. The Fun Run is due to start from Seddon Street in Raetihi at 10.00am
and finish in Rochfort Park in Ohakune. Two other events for the first day involve cy- ' cling. The first is a 25km cycling time trial which will start at Ohakune Junction at 1.00pm on Sunday 15 September and is open to anyone
who owns or cah borrow a bike, whether it is a racing bike, a mountain bike or an ordinary recreational bike, Medals will be awarded in separate categories of bikes and for separate age groups. Competitors will leave the start line in
Thames Street, Ohakune Junction, at one minute intervafs, then head down Miro Street, turn left into Shannon Street, right into Ruapehu Road then left onto SH49 and on to j Rangataua. From Rangataua, competitors will head back towards Ohakune along the Dreadnought Road and into Ruapehu Road. This part of the circuit will be repeated, but competitors will turn off, they will cycle only as far into Shannon Street, turn right into Mangawhero Terrace and then turn right towards the finish line in Thames Street where the 25km race began. The second Cycling Event is an 85km Road Race from the Chateau Tongariro starting at 11.00am on Monday 16 September. Competitors will once again be able to ride whatever type of bike is available to them, professional racing machines, mountain bikes or recreational. Each of these categories will be judged separately to maximise riders' chances of winning
medals. The road race is open to everyone between the ages of 15-19, 20-34,' 35-44, 45-54 and 55+. The winners will receive a New Zealand Winter
Games medal and all riders who complete the course will receive a New Zealand Winter Games certificate. Details of entry fees, applications, entry
