Garden worker overstayers caught
One Fijian Indian has been deported and 13 others face deportation following a check on Ohakune market garden workers last week. The 13 people were served with notices of intention to deport them. They have the right to appeal the notices, said police sergeant Bob Evans. Ohakune Vegetable Growers' Association president Elwin Greenwood was reported as saying it has been common practice to employ Fijian Indians and Indians recently and that they claim to have work permits. He said they were not given preference over locals for the work and that they were paid the same as anyone else. The locals get first preference, he said, if they can stick it out. The weather in Ohakune dur-
ing the winter was "atrocious" and the immigrants were prepared
to do the work while "a lot of other people are not".
