Seatbelts checked

The MOT is running a concentrated campaign on seatbelts. They are

setting up road checks to stop either all cars or some at random,

checking that seatbelts are being worn both in the front and back seats

of vehicles. "In the Waimarino area the problem of children not wearing seatbelts is probably no worse than anywhere else in the country," said local Traffic Officer Ian Harrison, "but it is still a problem." The television commercials on seatbelt safety have also been stepped up to coincide with the campaign. By law, if you are 15 years of age or older, then there is an automatic $75 fine for being caught not wearing a seatbelt. If a passenger in a car is under 15 years of age then the driver is responsible for him or her to wear a seatbelt, even if it is only a short trip. "If a car is not fitted with an approved child, restraint, an adult's seatbelt is better than no restraint at all", said Mr Harrison.
