Tournaments galore at Waiouru

By

Betwcen 26 and 30 August over 150 people converged on Waiouru for the Army Inter-Re-gional tournaments for both netball and rugby. Because many of the elimination games of netball and rugby overlapped there was not a lot of spectators at any of the games, but this did not dampen the spirit of those men and women who played their hardest to make the Army rep teams. Netball On Thursday the final

round of the Inter-Re-gional netball was played between Northern and ATG Waiouru. It was a fast moving game and hard fought by both teams. At half-time Northern, who appeared to be the dominant team, lead by 20-17. However ATG Waiouru came out fighting in the second half and managed to get a lot more possession of the ball. The scores began to zig-zag as each team had a spell with the lead. Then ATG stepped up ihe game and scorcd three goals in rapid

succession. Final score ATG 38, Northern 35. Hclen Copper, Sam Auckram and Toni Larkin from the ATG team played very well and were rewarded by being sclected for the Army rep team who will play at the Inter-Ser-vices games of 11 September. Theresa Svenson was player of the game. Rugby-Colts A slrong wind at the finals on Thursday during the game between

Southern and Central was to make or break the game, which was fast and open. Both teams were keen to run the ball at any opportunity. At half-time the score was Central 3, Southern 0. The wind again played an important role and Southern played it to their advantage with a lot more kicking for position. Final score Southern 11, Central 3. Southern were the overall Colts winners. Seniors Another excellent

game was played between Southern and Central. Southern used the wind to their advantage more than Central, and the backs seemed better organised. In the second half Central were forced back with long kicks and Southern showed they were the better side of the day. Final score Southern 19, Central 9. Southern were once

again the overall winners of the seniors section. Trooper Sullivan from QA Squadron in Waiouru must have impressed the selectors, as he made it

tnto both the Colts and Seniors rep teams. The Tournaments concluded with a buffet dinner and joint prizegiving on Thursday evening.
