Off campus courses
For those interested in stretching the mind and obtaining a qualifical ion the Waimarino OffCampus of the Wanganui Polytechnic are running courses towards the New Zealand Institute of Management, Certificate in Supervisory Management. This is a modular programme with each module consisting of 30 class hours, three assignments and a two hour exam, being completed in each term, eight in total to be complcted for the certificate. Subjects covered so far have been, marketing, labour relations, introduction to computers and principles of organization.
Additional classes have also been run at Waiouru. One of the original group has successfully completed the whole certificate with others at various stages. A person can start the certificate at any stage or just do only the module which is applicable to their work if they wish. Term three is offering communications which involve learning skills in leading/working with groups, meeting proeedures, public speaking, written communication, report writing, advertising, listening skills, logical thinking etc. We have been very fortunate with local tutors including Dave Scott, Dave Anderson, Erin Ikin,
David Waldron and Jenny Hare. The tuition has been of as high a standard as any large centre polytechnic. For the people who missed out on the two 32-hour computer courses a 1 day session with David and Jenny on the 7 September will enable computer owners to make the best use of their investment. Art and crafts are well catered for this term with stained glass patchwork, heirloom sewing techniques and fabric boxes all giving ideas for Christmas gifts. Stained glass patchwork, done either by machine or hand, is an applique technique where plain or textured fabrics are used to repre-
sent the colour and texture found in stained glass windows. Black bias represents the lead bars. Fabric boxes was a successful course run in April and repeated now by popular demand. Kamikawa Takaue will tutor introduction to Japanese. Basic language and customs will be taught over six weeks. Organisers urge people to enrol early to avoid disappointment as classes are sometimes cancelled a week prior if insufficient numbers are indicated, so a late enrolment may mean missing. Any suggestions for future courses are welcomed by Bev Kerr, co-ordinator.
