A boom year for Raetihi

1953 was one of Raetihi's boom years. Under the efforts of coach Des O'Donnell, a successful challenge was made for the Hetet Shield, which had been held by the Waitete Club. This game was Colin Mead's first senior game for the Waitete Club. About this period Raetihi was embarrassed at the number of its

players who were picked to represent King Country. As a result Raetihi found it hard to field a team for the local competitions and lost many valuable games. The 1953 Raetihi senior team won four coveted cups. The Charity Cup, Levin Cup, Riverhead Desert Gold Cup and the Champion of Champions Cup.

They also won three shields. The Raetihi Challenge Shield, the Adset Shield and the Hetet Shield which was proof of the team's supremacy in the King Country Club competition. The team scored 203 points throughout the season and a meagre 35 points were scored against it.
