Violinist wins friends, earns dollars
Busking by the supermarket in Ohakune has proved to be a worthwhile way to wile away the hours for young violinist Joy-Anna Friar recently. Joy has been playing for passers-by to raise money to go to the Suzuki National Music Conference in Cambridge in the September holidays. She needs $400 and busking three days a week has already
earned her about $300, $106 in just 40 minutes during one performance at Rotorua. And she doesn't have to practice at home if she's been busking! (though her mother said she does have to work on the new pieces she wants to learn). "People have been very generous," said Mrs Jill Friar. "Skiers and locals have been very impressed with her mu-
sic, and many people have said how much they like to see someone doing something for themselves." Some days her younger sister Vashti accompanies Joy, also on the violin. Their older brother Daniel is also a musician who plans to go to the music camp, but busking is a bit difficult for him. "He plays the piano," explains Mrs Friar.
