Lahar system tested today

Whakapapa skiers will be reminded they are skiing on a volcano when they take part in a civil defence lahar warning system exercise today. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts and Department of Conservation staff will be joined by Ministry of Civil Defence staff on the field to test the lahar (mudflow caused by crater lake eruption) warning system. The system involves

the use of sirens and a message broadcasting system to call people on the field to move to higher ground, generally ridges, away from the paths of any mudflow. The exercise is expected to take about 15 minutes which means skiers won't lose much skiing time, said assis-

tant civil defence commissioner Keith Dixon. He said the exercise would make people who use the mountain more aware that there is potential danger from the volcano but that there are also safety measures in place. Following the exercise

a debriefing will be held with staff to discuss any problems and improvements that may be necessary. The ministry is running a civil defence public awareness campaign, "Nga Puia - Volcanoes", from July 1991 to June 1992.
