Back to start for Raetihi meat plant
It's back to first base for the Raetihi industrial land scheme change that would have allowed the establishment of a $6 million meat processing plant. Following an appeal against the previous planning decision, Judge W.J.M Treadwell of Wanganui allowed a consent order which gives AFFCO status as an objector to the scheme. Their grounds for appealing were that they were not personally notified of the proposed scheme change and that council staff were not delegated the powers to carry out the scheme change, but did it anyway. AFFCO has now formally objected to the scheme change and a second hearing must be held. AFFCO have requested
that the scheme change be cancelled, or that it be altered to be consistent with existing district scheme restrictions. At the original hearing an AFFCO representative said the company's Taumarunui works, which is within the same Ruapehu
District boundaries, would be economically affected by the establishment of the Raetihi meat works. Submissions in support or opposition to AFFCO's appeal can now also be lodged with the council.
