College soccer triumph in Wanganui
Bobby Chand scored a hat-trick of goals at Wembley Park in Wanganui to lead the Ruapehu College soccer team to a spirited victory on Saturday against the experienced Lada Old Boys College .were two goals down early in the game and it looked like they were in for a heavy defeat. Fine spirit by the team saw them claw their way back in to level the game just before half time. Bobby Chand tumed skillfully in the opposition goal area and took a snap shot, which sneaked in by the far post for the first of his goals. A shot from halfway by Craig Maru, bounced over the keeper's head and Glen Journeaux blasted a shot from close range. Early in the second half the College team were down another goal, but the gutsy winning Bridge There was a disappointing turn-out for bridge on Wednesday night with only four tables playing a total of twenty boards. Top pair in the NorthSouth direction were Tani Blackburn and Gabby Mareikura who scored 69 of a possible 120 points which is 57.50% Five points behind in second place were John Eades and Jack Trembath with 53.33% of a possible 120. Ron Frew and Brian Eades took the first place East-West with 63.33% and Betty Hammond and Rita Kaiwhare scored 51.67% to take second place. spirit of the team showed through again. Some skillful wing interplay by Geoff Pitts and Glen Journeaux, opened up the opposition defense. Midfielder John Laurenson had a shot which rebounded off the keeper and landed at Bobby Chand's feet. Bobby flicked the ball over the stranded keeper and into an open goal for the College equalizer. With the game level, College had to soak up a lot of pressure. The defence of Craig Maru, Leini Hakaumotu and Geoff Pitts held firm, ably backed up by Glen Rodger in goal. Five minutes before the end Glen Journeaux decided to vary a corner kick to keep it away from the tall Old Boys defenders. He hit the corner to McCartney, who volleyed the ball from in front towards the goal. Bobby Chand, with his back towards
the opposition goal, deviated the ball for his third goal and the winner. The last five minutes seemed to drag on for hours, with the opposition trying to regain the lead. Aeneas O'Sullivan had another good game, but in a changed position of left fullback. Avinesh Sharma worked hard again in attack and defence. It was an excellent performance by the whole team. In the second round of the competition, College have won five of their six games and have secured sixth place in the Wanganui Super League. This week they play Collegiate school at the College grounds at 2.30pm. Collegiate beat College 5-0 in the last round so College will be hoping to use their home advantage and reverse the result.
