"Railway Row" retained
Ohakune Junction's Railway Row shouid stay as Railway Row, the Waimarino Community Board decided at their last meeting. The board was asked to consider the name of the street which, although it has been in physical existence since 1903, is only now to become a legal road. The subdividers of the area suggested Quinn Road, Quinlin Road or Garlick Road. Board members said none of three meant anything to them and that most in the area knew it as Railway Row. Also suggested were Railway Avenue or Railway Drive. The Board opted for a new name for State Highway 49, although it is already well in use. They recommended the road become RaetihiOhakune Road. The road is no longer a state highway and needed
a new official name. The board heard it had been called Pipiriki-Waiouru Road and also suggested was Waimarino Road. Most of the board agreed Waimarino Road was unsuitable as very few people outside the district relate to it. Doug Bennett disagreed, favouring Waimarino Road. "We've got cars now, not horses and carts - Raetihi-Ohakune Road is confusing," he said.
