Waiouru Police file

by

scales

During last week Taupo Police arrested a man in connection with the recent incident which a sawn off shotgun was presented at Traffic Officer Mike Lenihan and Constable Pat Tasker on the Desert Road. Police are still seeking a second man in connection with this incident. • On Thursday night, Police and the fire service attended an accident on the railway crossing south of Waiouru in which a vehicle went out of control and collided into the warming alarms. The two occupants suffered minor injuries and were treated and discharged from the Waiouru Camp Hospital. They were very lucky to have not suffered serious injury, and the car was written off. • In the early hours of Friday morning, the three occupants of a vehicle travelling north from Palmerston North decided to have a rest in the car park of the Big Tex Restaurant in Taihape . After admiring four fluttering flags at the restaurant, they decided they would be better suited adorning their bedroom walls,. They stole the flags damaging the flagpoles in the process. Unluckily for them, they were seen by a member of the public. A quick call to the Po-

lice, an interrupted nights sleep, and the hapless trio were stopped and arrested in Waiouru a short time later and the property recovered. They will appear in the Taihape District Court later in the month. • People are still trying their luck in attempting to drink and drive. Over the past week, a large number of motorists have been stopped and breath tested for drinking and driving and several are now facing possible court action. The penalty for a first time offence of drink-driving carries a maximum penalty of three months imprisonment, $4,500.00 fine and six months disqualification.

Any subsequent or further offence of drink driving sees the penalties raised considerably. It is not worth it. On the other hand it was encouraging to see the majority of people utilising the Waiouru shuttle service or having a sober driver transport them around. We are still holding a Citizen digital divers watch with a black strap. This watch is believed to be stolen from the rugby club changing rooms and was recovered a couple of weeks ago. If you think it may be yours give us a call. I am also pleased to report that we have had no dishonesty offences or burglaries reported to us during the past week.
