College show spirit in sludge

BY

Grampian

Recent heavy frosts and a mid-week game against Taumarunui High School have tumed the centre of the College soccer field into a muddy ice-rink, but College forward Yannis Potts mastered the conditions and scored a hat-trick of goals. Ruapehu College maintain 8 th place in the league, after their 53 win against Wanganui High School on the 6 July, but they are closing the gap on their rivals. College have had a mixed week this last week after a heavy loss to league leaders, HSOB.1-9 last Saturday, and a gutsy 3-2 win against Taumarunui High School in an inter school game on Wednesday.

College went into the lead 20 minutes into the first half against Wanganui High School, after a period of sustained pressure on the High School goal. Yannis Potts broke down the right and unselfishly crossed low across the area for Bobbie Chand to score. High School came back into the game five minutes later when speedy forward Matthew Rennie was tripped in the penalty area. He recovered fully enough to score from the penalty spot. College were stung again ten minutes later by the High School forwards and it appeared as though the College team were looking at another defeat. The College players showed good spirit and Yannis Potts struck back for the College and tied the game

up just before the halftime break. Just after the break Yannis was again instrumental in the College attack when he was brought down in the area. He slotted the penalty. Minutes later Yannis completed his hat-trick by driving a free-kick from just outside the box. Bobby Chand was rewarded for some hard running in the game with a well taken goal 15 minutes from time. Although High School had many scoring opportunities, College kept their defensive pattern with some fine work from Leini Hakaumotu and Phillip Hawken in cjefense.and Glen Rodger in goal. College play East Athletic on the 13 July at the College ground and spectators are most welcome.
