Raetihi diver aims high

BY

GAIL IMHOFF

Seventeen year old diver Wayne Te Huia is aiming for the Olympic Games or the next Commonwealth Games. Wayne was a very successful age-group diver while he was at school in Raetihi. He is now living in Hamilton with the intention of furthering his diving career. At the New Zealand Diving Championship at Wellington in March Wayne won both the 1 metre and 3 metre events in the 16-18 age group competition. He also won gold in the Men's Open 1 metre event and silver in the 3 metre event. To date Wayne has

competed in only one international diving competition, when he came fourth at the Swedish Flag Competition held in Hamilton. Now he is going to the Australian -Winter Games in Adelaide in September to gain further experience in international competition. While in •* Adelaide he will be attempting two dives not previously tried by any New Zealander. To enable him to compete he has to raise over $2,000 towards his expenses. Wayne's mother, Rauna Te Huia, is holding a batons up evening at the Raetihi Rugby Gym at 6pm on Thursday 4 July to help raise funds for him.
