Bulk snow causes skiing delays

Sunday was the day for skiing on Ruapehu on the weekend, with lots of new snow on Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields. Turoa had all facilities operating apart from the second teleski by the end of the day, although the heavy snowfalls overnight Saturday and the previous days saw delays in starting the lifts for the 2800 visitors. Avalanche control work delayed opening the field to the public until about 9.45am. The slick surface of the Ohakune Mountain Road caused major delays, with some people reporting four hour journeys to the carpark. Road staff have cited the large number of light-weight front wheel drive cars, many of which have traction problems, as causing much of the delay. Whakapapa had the Waterfall T Bar, the Valley T Bar, the Waterfall Express and the Happy Valley tows operating on Saturday. A spokesperson said while there is plenty of snow on the western slopes, they need a little more on the Knoll Ridge for access. Whakapapa's Happy Valley was open Saturday. Very poor visibility closed both the road and the Turoa skifield on Saturday. Both fields were open Monday.
