S & R Group checks Turoa
An exercise designed to develop familiarity with the mountain area immediately below the Turoa ski field was held on Saturday. The exercise was also used to hone the navigation skills and the radio procedures of the participants - the Waimarino Search and Rescue Group. Throughout the time
teams were out in the field, rain fell and with knee deep snow in places and ice covered rocks in others, conditions were far from pleasant. However all the team members thought the exercise was worthwhile despite the conditions. The exercise was controlled by Waimarino Search and Rescue Advisor Noel Shepherd assisted by Waimarino Amateur Radio Emergency Corp volunteers and Department of Conservation and Police staff.
The next planned exercise for the Waimarino Search and Rescue Group is an evening's training in field first aid. The tentative date for this is Tuesday 30 July at 7.30pm at the old bowling green behind the
DOC headquarters. If any members of the community wish to become involved in search and rescue activities enquiries can be made at either the DOC headquarters of the Ohakune Police Station.
