Oldest ex--policeman dies, at 101
New Zealand's oldest ex-policeman, who spent some of his early
policing years in Raetihi, has died aged 101. Creighton Chesnutt joined the police force after serving in World War One and was posted to Raetihi in 1928. Many of Mr Chesnutt's experiences in the area are found in "Policing the Wanganui River", the book by Charlie Spicer. He was serving in Taihape when he was called to the Tangiwai Disaster in 1953, two years before he retired, and he played a role in the "battle of Manui" which led to the armed offenders squad formation.
