11 for regional council
The opportunity for members of the community to comment on representation on the Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council will come up when they call for submissions on an eleven person council. At present sixteen members represent eight areas from around the region, which does not
compLy with the Local Government Act which requires that the population of each constituency when divided by the number of members to be elected should produce a figure no greater or less than ten per cent.At present there is a range from minus 30 per cent for Ruapehu to plus 27 percent for Rangitikei. The eleven person
scenario meets the requirements of legislation giving Tararua, Rangitikei and Ruapehu one councillor each with Wanganui receiving two and a combined Horowhenua-Manawatu and Palmerston North constituency three members. There will also be an additional benefit of saving the Council $100,000 in expenditure.
