College soccer bows to experience
Ruapehu College slipped back a place to seventh in the league after a 4-1 loss to the experienced Lada Old Boys on 25 May. Lada Old Boys is a Wanganui High School Old Boys team, which came into the River City League two weeks after the other teams to make up numbers and prevent the bye. They are two games in arrears of the other teams but proved too hot to handle for the physically smaller College based side. Ahead by 1-0 early in the match from a Duane Dixon goal after about 10 minutes, College had the Wanganui team on the back foot for the first 20 minutes. Just before half time, Lada were given a free kick outside the College area and coolly drilled the ball past the defensive wall, low into the net. The score was 1-1 at half time. Lada came out firing in the second half and their experience and strength allowed them to dominate play in the College half. College seemed to lack the commitment they had shown on their two previous winning games, probably too excited about going back to school on Mon-
day. Eada scored three times in the second half, two from soft defensive lapses and one brilliant piece of individual skill, when a Lada forward chipped the ball on the run over the keeper. College were unlucky themselves in front of the Lada Old Boys goal on several occasions with Duane Dixon and Aeneas O'Sullivan peppering the opposition goal with shots. On 1 June, the College team travels to Wanganui to play Collegiate school at the Collegiate field. College will be hoping to emulate the Ruapehu College ski team and defeat the Wanganui side. Readers are invited to drop into the Collegiate grounds and support the local side this Saturday in Wanganui.
