Waiouru beats Ohakune Karioi

BY

LINEOUT

The Ohakune-Karioi team can take pride in their performance when they played outright leaders Waiouru at Rugby on Saturday but lost 3-16. Although Waiouru were missing a key player or two OhakuneKarioi was without Mathews and Brown (injUries) and lost Vine and Harding during the course of the game. Waiouru however, did not look like losing and after a 7-3 halftime lead clinched the game in the last ten minutes. The Ohakune-Karioi forwards had the better game and dominated up front with the front row looking good in the set pieces and playing aggressive rugby. Ralph Wallace for Waiouru is surely a polished player and Solomon the flanker is a very skillful young man. Bruce Gowler. had an outstanding game for Ohakune-Karioi and Grant Barrett played well in the backline showing a few skills Brendon Wilson looks better every game. He was in his old position as first five and went to halfback when Vine went off. The Ohakune-Karioi

tight five are now going very well and it was a pleasure to see Kerry Brown run out in his favourite position as number eight. A fitter Kerry Brown will bring more to the repetoire of their game. The Waiouru players were not happy with their game but were happy with their win. The Ohakune-Karioi players who played a totally different game without their key players were happy with their game. Paul Tamati was Ohakune-Karioi's player of the day and Solomon player of the day for Waiouru. Scorers; Waiouru - Dwayne Erickson, Pedro Van Der Ent tries. Brian Clark two penalties and a conversion. Ohakune - Lachlan Harding a penalty. Raetihi vs Hunterville Raetihi were defeated 38-0 by Hunterville at rugby on Saturday. The game was rather static and as a result of limited spectator appeal. Hunterville forwards dominated their Raetihi counterparts in the loose. Hunterville forwards arrived in numbers

at the break downs and as a result won some good second and third phase ball. They also showed more urgency than Raetihi, with Adrian Bull, in particular, making some good crashing runs. The Raetihi backs looked good individually with their limited supply of ball but they didn't support each other and often failed to take the right option. Even so there was some pleasing aspects of their play. Darren McDonnell displayed some excellent skills when he came on as fullback in the second half. Brendon Kavanagh, who has played senior rugby in Wellington for MaristSt Pats, looked a class player at half back and Aaron McCann played outstandingly at first five. The extra room that the position offered allowed him to display his undoubted skills. Raetihi held Hunterville for the first 20 minutes of the game but a lack of confidence plus a slowness around the field allowed Hunterville too much room to move. Scorers; Hunterville - Tries Adrian Bull two, Horima Potaka, Rod McCaughan, Mark Godfrey, Slade Turmey and I Dave Gordon. Robert Tohia five conversions.
