AFFCO appeals Raetihi scheme change

AFFCO has decided to go ahead with its appeal of the recent Raetihi District Scheme Change, which would allow the development of a $6 m i 1 1 i o n m e yA processing plant m the town. / The ground^y for the objection Are. that AFFCO was not personally notified of the scheme change, as a possi^Ie economically affected party within the district; and that there was a procedural problem in the scheme change in that the council had not officially delegated some of

the necessary/powers to the officers/ who worked on the scheme change. One of AFFCO's lawybrs, John McCrae, said at the planning hearing that adopting a new industrial zone which did not specify land uses was contrary to the planning approach in the current Raetihi district Scheme. AFFCO told the council at the hearing that the area was adequately served by meat works and the rezoning was unnecessary, with AFFCO operating plants at Taumarunui and Wanganui and that there were others at Hawera and Waitotara.
