New Pipiriki jet boat

Pipiriki conservation staff are now plying the waters of the Whanganui River in a brand-new jet boat bigger, better and lighter than their old one. The boat was delivered recently from the manufacturers and, after a wait of a few days while the keys were couriered to them, staff tried out the 350 Chev V8 powered Hamilton Jet. While the new five metre alloy boat carries 10 people, it is lighter than the old six seater jet boat which was built in steel. Because of the lightness and the new motor the new boat will be cheaper to run than the old one. The river provides the only access to most of the reaches from Pipiriki to Whakahoro and with increasing use of the river and the need to carry increased amounts of material, gear and people the smaller boats were not able to cope.
