DOC reminds hunters to return diaries

The February to May hunting permit period for the Tongariro/Taupo Conservancy of the Department of Conservation comes to a close on 31 May 1991. During this hunting period more than 3,000 hunting permits were issued. The Tongariro/Taupo Department of Conservation are asking all hunters who have been issued with a permit to return the "hunting diary" portion to the Turangi DoC office, Private bag, Turangi, before 14 June 1991. Senior Conservation officer, Cam Speedy, said that it was unfortunate the roar had not been particularly vocal this year but he expected to have a clearer picture of its succcss when the diaries were returned. All hunters who retum diaries are entered into a prize draw. Prizes include free helicopter or fixed wing transport into the Kaimanawa and/or Kaweka ranges, sporting goods and free accommodation. Mr. Speedy said that the information gathered from hunter's diaries provides DoC with valuable information on both hunter usage and harvest levels. The information is useful even if no kills are recorded. The department also asks hunters who may have obtained a permit but who were unable to go hunting to return their diaries. These hunters are still eligible for the prize draw.
