Bridge

There was severe competition for bridge club members on Wednesday 8 May, not from each other as would be expected but from outside influences. With the annual plunket fashion parade, State-of-Origin league on TV, and Winter's ailments there weren't many people left to attend bridge. In fact only twelve people attended meaning three tables playing a total of twenty-four boards. Competition for honours North-south was fairly even with Tracy Ennis and Les Burns taking first place. East- West however was a different story. Mark Hays and Bob Tumataroa tried vcry hard to take third place from John Eades and Tephany Bennett but John's aggressive bidding meant they had to settle for second. This left the way clear for Betty Hammond and Rita Kaiwhare to romp home unopposed. Results, North-south First, Tracy Ennis and Les Burns, 54.17%; second, Ron Martin and Heather Cranston, 52.08%; third, Colin Cox and Beverly Cox, 43.75%. East-West. First, Rita Kaiwhare and Betty Hammond, 70.83%, Second, Mark Hayes and Bob Tumataroa, 42.71%, third, John Eades and Tephany Bennett, 36.46%.
