Council supports ambulance service
The Ruapehu District Council has urged the area health board to retain and if necessary strengthen the ambulance services to the Waimarino and Waiouru areas. The council has also expressed support for the Waimarino Rescue Trust helicopter service, which is operated locally and based at the Raetihi air field. The demand for ambulance services has doubled in the last ten years in the area, mayor Garrick Workman told the council, and the physi-
cally isolated nature of the area demands at least two ambulances be based in the area. The council also supports the ambulances being based one in Raetihi and one in Waiouru. The continuation of the present helicopter rescue service is supported because the pilot has local knowledge of the difficult terrain in the area, it is at no cost to the board and it is based here, which saves valuable time in emergencies.
